Recipe No.6: Store your data properly to keep it safe

Total time 35 mins

Description

This recipe is fairly simple but a bit long. Allow a little time — the time you spend now is time you won't lose later. The main ingredient of this recipe is the UpdraftPlus backup. Come on, let's get started.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Go to Plugins>Add New and type updraft in the search box. You should get this (see attached image). Install the plugin. (You can install these three very useful plugins but activate only the first one for now.)
  2. Click the link that appears in your WordPress dashboard or go to Settings>UpdraftPlus Backups
  3. Click the Settings tab and choose the frequency of your backups. For a launch phase when activity is higher, I choose every 12 hours and 5 backups for files, and every 4 hours and 10 backups for my database.
  4. You can check the Email box to receive a report, then click Save
  5. Return to the Current Status tab and click Backup

Note

There you have it — not directly related to SEO. But securing your site and setting up automatic backups is very simple to schedule and saves a lot of time and worry. You can go further, and it's advisable to do so, by storing that backup on a different medium than the one hosting your site. In case of a server problem you'll have a second safety net. A recipe covers that, but a little later ;-)
