Goossips SEO: MUVERA & Generic Domains

Some unofficial bits of information about Google (and sometimes Bing) and their search engines, gathered here and there over the past few days, with this week's lineup answering a few of these questions: Is the MUVERA algorithm really used by Google? Is it wise for a small business to bet on a generic domain name?

Ultimately, MUVERA is not yet used in Google Search

Google has not confirmed using MUVERA (Multi-Vector Retrieval via Fixed Dimensional Encodings), despite some rumors circulating in the SEO community. Gary Illyes clarified on LinkedIn that hehe never confirmed the use of MUVERA in search : he simply indicated that Google could leverage a similar technology under a different internal name. MUVERA is an algorithm designed to make multi-vector retrieval faster and more efficient by converting complex data into a simplified representation that facilitates optimized searches, while allowing better refinement of results for complex queries. However, MUVERA's presence on the Google Research blog does not mean it is currently used in production within Google Search.

The clarification is commendable. However, it would not have been surprising if Google were using this new algorithm in Google Search.

Small businesses: avoid domain names made of generic keywords

Google advises small businesses against choosing domain names made up solely of generic keywords. John Mueller points out that this choice can harm online visibility because it makes it hard to stand out in search results where many competitors and directories target the same terms. Conversely, creating a distinctive brand facilitates direct recognition, encourages clear inbound links and reduces confusion with other sites. Even for local SEO, it's preferable to work on content, structured data and your Google Business profile rather than sacrifice brand identity for a generic domain. Google's approach now prioritizes quality, relevance and trust in ranking, relegating the benefits of keyword domains to a bygone era. Companies that focus on memorability and brand differentiation therefore gain a real long-term advantage, both for SEO and word-of-mouth.

On this point, we largely agree with John Mueller. It's hard to stand out with a generic name that will be quickly forgotten or confused with another due to insufficient popularity. As a reminder, keywords in domain names do not guarantee better rankings, even if they can be informative for users viewing the SERP.
