Let’s go over the distinctive features of Threads and its positioning in today’s digital landscape…

Threads: finally available in France!

Threads, the new microblogging platform developed by Meta, is now available in France after launching on July 5, 2023 in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. This French rollout represents a major milestone for the social network, which quickly attracted 100 million daily active users after launch, demonstrating its potential as a serious competitor to X (formerly Twitter).

Created by the company behind Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, Threads fits into Meta’s diversification strategy, aiming to expand beyond its existing platforms and attract a varied audience.

Threads: the ultimate anti-X (Twitter)?

In terms of user interaction, Threads shows many similarities with X. Users on both platforms can reply to posts, like them, share a post, add a comment, or broadcast it beyond the app. It is possible to mute, hide, block or report content.

Nevertheless, Meta’s platform is often presented as the anti-Twitter, mainly because of the following differences:

Content moderation

Threads stands out from X for its ambitions in content moderation. While Elon Musk’s platform has frequently been criticized for poor handling of hateful content and misinformation, Threads seems to be moving toward a stricter, more proactive approach, aiming to create a safer and more respectful online environment.

Interface and user experience

Threads is described as a “Twitter with fewer nooks and crannies.” This suggests a more refined and possibly less complex user interface designed to offer a smoother, more intuitive user experience.

Positioning strategy

Threads appears to position itself not only as a competitor to X but also as an alternative for Facebook and Instagram users who, until now, had never tried microblogging.

Integration with other social platforms

Threads stands out through unique integrations with Meta’s other services, as well as the future possibility of integrating with Mastodon — another well-known alternative to X.

Content formats

On X (Twitter), you can attach 4 photos to posts, versus 10 on Threads. Regarding text limits, Threads offers 500 characters per post to its users, compared with 280 on X (except for Twitter’s premium accounts, which benefit from 10,000 characters).

No private messages in Threads

Direct messages are not (yet?) available on Meta’s new platform. However, since sign-up requires an Instagram account, users can easily switch between the two platforms to communicate privately.

What is the profile of Threads users?

The brand-new social network Threads brings together both Instagram users and microblogging enthusiasts.

You should know that it's impossible to interact on Meta's latest platform without an Instagram account! So it's precisely to those internet users that Threads is addressed. The social network draws from an existing pool of social media users to find an audience seeking a more dynamic platform, where text outweighs images and conversations dominate.

On Threads, expect to find profiles attracted to digital tools, seeking to share and reflect with their peers. Since this social network emphasizes creating public conversations, it will appeal to communities looking for belonging or wanting to widely share their passions.

How can companies use Threads for their digital communication?

Meta's new social network offers several opportunities for businesses to improve their digital communication. To do this, make sure to:

  • Create an impactful business profile : as on any platform, polish your image to encourage users to follow you.
  • Use relevant hashtags : join or create communities centered around a thematic hashtag related to your activity, fostering targeted interactions with a qualified audience.
  • Share short, engaging content : share opinions, infographics, animations, videos and other enriching content that encourages engagement.
  • Host events : use Threads' event options to energize your communication with webinars or online workshops.
  • Engage in conversations : be active on your profile, share your expertise, answer questions and provide helpful advice to build authentic connections.
  • Link your Instagram profile : use Threads to boost your Instagram community and vice versa! With both platforms linked, you can create a multichannel user experience.

How to join Threads?

To create an account on Threads, you can download the mobile app from the App Store or Google Play Store, or go directly through the website.

Registration is very simple, especially if you already have an Instagram profile. In that case, it's possible to sync your information such as your name, bio, website, email…

However, you can also customize the bio and the link if you want to distinguish your Threads strategy from your Instagram strategy.

Once registration is complete, the platform invites you to follow the same profiles as on Instagram. You also have the option to manually choose who to follow and to search for others later.

Our tip for using Threads

Threads is still too new to fully understand its algorithm and user preferences. When signing up on the platform, remember to test formats, content types, interactions, posting times and days…

The more data you have to analyze, the better you'll understand how Threads works and what your followers expect.
