Barely a few days after the March 2026 Spam Update, Google is back with the first Core Update of the year. This is a standard update, rolled out over two weeks across all languages and territories, which aims to better reward relevant and satisfying content, regardless of site type.
Google rolls out its first Core Update of 2026
After the December 2025 Core Update, the first Core Update of 2026 has arrived. It comes just days after the March 2026 Spam Update.
Here is what Google says in its communication:
"Today we released the March 2026 core update to Google Search.
This is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites. The rollout may take up to 2 weeks to complete."
Unlike previous Core Updates, the rollout of this update will be shorter. It is expected to last 2 weeks, not 3!

Should we worry?
No, this is a routine Google update whose purpose is not to penalize sites, but to highlight the best content. In other words, if you notice a drop, it means other content is now considered more relevant than yours.
Beyond Core and Spam Updates, remember that Google launches thousands of updates per year to meet its users' expectations. A few months ago, John Mueller mentioned the figure of 4,700 annual updates, resulting from more than 700,000 tests.
What to do during a major Google algorithm update?
Do nothing special! Instead of panicking, monitor your traffic in Google Search Console and wait for the update to finish (2 weeks in this case) before making major changes on your website.
