Recipe No. 4: On the Importance of Properly Using SSL

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. In French, "guaranteed security sockets." It's the protocol that lets your visitor know they are on a secure site. It's very important for the trust your visitor gives you (you know, the little padlock in your browser bar, and the S in https://). It's also the protocol that lets you protect your SEO kitchen. Your customer's credit card number won't be copyable from your website, no one should be able to log in as you, etc. All of this relates to cybersecurity, which is essential in e-commerce.

All the more important since Google gives a boost to secure sites. So do it. Especially since it's free and very easy. Get ready, here we go!

How to activate the SSL protocol on a WordPress site?

So you followed my advice and opened an account with Infomaniak. Well done — activating an SSL certificate won't take much effort! On the other hand, it will only bring you good things. Like salt for cooking, SSL is now vital! There are some rare specific sites that may need to be without SSL, but that's very uncommon. If that's your case, contact us and we'll sort it out!
One more note: if you can't select the free Let's Encrypt certificate, it's because your domain name is too new — wait 48 hours and try again.

  • 1 SSL certificate
  1. Go to your hosting: Home/Domain & Hosting/Manage hosting/YOURHOST/
  2. Click on SSL Certificate on the left
  3. In the dropdown menu in the center choose your Domain Name and click "Install"
  4. check Free SSL certificate (https) and click "Save"
  5. That's it, enjoy! You can verify by typing https://www.yoursite.com into a browser (note the S is important). You should see your site appear. Likewise, if you type your site without SSL (just http) it should redirect you to your secure address.
